Richard Dawkins is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britain's leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" for 2007.

Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term "meme". He is a prominent critic of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book "The Blind Watchmaker", he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics.

Richard Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist, and supporter of the Brights movement. In his 2006 book "The God Delusion", he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that faith qualifies as a delusion − as a fixed false belief.

  • That leads us to an odd conundrum. He says something is child abuse, but doesn't want someone prosecuted for it? So child abuse shouldn't be a crime?

  • Whatever happened to live and let live?

  • @ralax3 It was a youth group called "Together in Christ." And you are right, a lot don't, fortunately I'm not the only "rebel" in my house, my sister being bisexual. At any rate, my dad never talked to me on it, never treated me different and when I finally talked to him on it...he was fairly cool about it, though did a little bit of a guilt trip on me, though I think unintended. My mother was a whole other fiasco, it was a fight with her to stop forcing me to church with them.

  • @nocliper101 What kid of group ? Well, I always thought that children that are raised in catholic families have less chances to renounce their faith. What group ? How did your catholic parents reacted to your atheistm ?

  • @ralax3 Meaning by my parents or myself? It was a three year process with me with my faith (thankfully) dying before I decided I was atheist, though only about a year and a half to renounce Christianity for a form of deism.

My parents had us go through 8 years of Sunday school, church every week or more, religious talks often and...actually thankfully, a shit youth group that opened my eyes...to how bad the religion actually was. That youth group is what started it.

  • @nocliper101 I always thought that Catholics were the ones that give their faith hardest

  • @ralax3 -Raised Roman Catholic, became Atheist at age 17- I agree with Dawkins on this one mostly exact where it may come to indoctrination.

  • Just cause you were baptised by your parent doesn't mean that you are a Christian mind and soul. You must be the one who chooses, not your parents.

  • Just cause you were baptised by your parents doesn't mean that you are a Christian with your mind and soul.

  • The major problem with teaching religion to kids is that they instill fear of an imaginary boogeyman and a place of eternal torture... Such nonsense should NEVER be thought to a child, this is psychological trauma material!

Oh, and let's not forget the parents that ground their kids for becoming atheists or better yet, who beat the piss out of their kids to "save" them...
