Derrick shows us his Asti Banana Racket. He claims the crooked handle shape makes it easier for looping. He identifies himself as a Lazy Looper; the racket helps him out. He describes looping as catching the top of the ball and putting a lot of spin on it

Dave Kendall shakes Derricks hand and leaves telling us Mr. Stockhausen eliminated him as the Top Seed in their event. Dave isn't a looper so lets Derrick continue his explanation and technique demonstration.

Looping is not hitting the ball, but just grazing it; hit it on the side, on the top, or on the inside. Actually, you just whip. On his backhand he reaches down between his legs and grazes the ball as it's brought up and then released.

Derricks rating is 1359. He says people without a rating are Unrated. They have to get a rating from the USTTA to compete with the other fellows. He labels 1700 players as advanced. World Class players are Professionals -- not 1700 level players. Derrick isn't a professional and Blackie says he's a Peon. He suggests I call all the 1300 level players Peons; perhaps after I've played a match with them.

He plays with Chinese Rubber and assembles the paddle himself. Asti sells him the banana blade but didn't put it together with the topsheets which he got from China.

Derrick says looping is a popular style because it hits the ball fast. He learned how to loop in San Bernardino, California from a USATT Certified Professional Table Tennis Coach named Greg Smith and a fellow named Go Go who was a good 1800 level player.
