I think its more like saying that he hopes one day she will realise what she passed up. Be it if he is still around or not. He would have loved het til the end of time, whilst the others in her life wouldn't have. She passed up the best thing to ever happen to her and by the time she realises it....it will be too late. Thats what I got from the ending
