Mondale=Hillary Clinton, Hart=Obama. The superdelegates made a mistake in 1984. Should have been Hart-Bentsen. What a pity.
No one could have defeated Reagan. It's not not because he was good but because this election occurred during the 1969-2009 Republican realignment. Reagan was far from great and I consider him one of the worst.

I fail to see that charisma. Reagan was always like a zombie. Even when he was young.

No Democrat could have won in 1984. The economy is awful in 1980 and much improved in 1984. Besides that, Americans were infatuated by Reagan's charisma and upbeat attitude. The only Democrat which could have made the '84 race a little interesting was Sen. Kennedy, but he opted not to run.
