outtakes and bloopers with funny outtakes from my two year Television HND Diploma course at Jewel & Esk College, United Kingdom from 2008.

I really enjoyed my time at Jewel and Esk, one of Edinburgh's Scottish community colleges; the lecturers are really funny and share their experiences of working withing the industry which gives you a good understanding of what it's really like in the real world so put together this TV bloopers outtakes reel. We learned a variety of subjects during the course which included script writing skills for factual and non factual programming. We also picked up editing skills where used AVID, the industry standard programme that most professional editors use. During this process, we learned to edit alone but also to edit to a brief given by a Director to us Scotland college students.

Sound was another area we students focused on which included sound recording on location and using booms and SQN mixers. This unit was extremely invaluable and has came in extremely handy for work I've had since. Camera Operation is always an essential part of the filmmaking process so we got to grips with using a variety of DVC PRO cameras in the second year, having to use the large heavy battery belts once although these are almost a thing of the past.

Production Management was an area that appealed to me at the City College where I learned how to produce call sheets, production schedules, breakdown sheets and pick up the skills for coordinating the production teams. Lighting was an area we touched but not in so much detail, I would like to have done some more in depth knowledge and training in this area as I'm still unsure with this topic.
Producing came to everyone naturally as being very low budget, you frequently find yourself doing a variety of tasks within a production project such as Directing then Editing.

The movie making class bonded well when we started where we had a fun treasure hunt at the start of the course to break the ice. This worked really well and so we got everyone talking to each other very quickly and that meant we could get stuck into learning the next week. I picked up a good amount of knowledge in the script writing lessons where we were told about narrative and the conventions of the script ie formats and short phrases to use to describe things. We also learned about writing Treatments and putting together a proposal.

The other great thing about the college education course was the opportunity to get involved in outside productions such as filming a Crystal Skull Convention at the Hub in Edinburgh as a multi cam operator and also a Camera Operator for filming the new construction at Roslyn Chapel which we did in 2008/09. You can see some of this in this friends bloopers youtube video. I also managed to gain some experience during the college courses as a Sound Recordist working on a pilot for a History of Mount Lothian video production which also came out with some funny bloopers.

The opportunities at UK colleges and universities were limitless. My other respect for the course was the class trips which included a filming day at the Edinburgh Christmas Market where we carried out interviews with members of the public, asking them what they thought of Christmas. There is an extras outtakes reel of this too available.

My last production was a short promotional video of the Green Team, a conservation charity based in Edinburgh where I spent three weekends filming the group at work and interviewing the members of the group and volunteer leaders.

My biggest production was in the first year where I produced a film called Mind of Obsession, which is a 30 minute short adaptation of the British classic Kind Hearts and Coronets Film which I was inspired by. Some bloopers funny are online too of this production. There are blooper videos containing deleted scenes, media outtakes and a behind the scenes outtakes bloopers extended video on my Bloopers TV Youtube channel.

We watched lots of short instructional videos during my time at the colleges and universities which helped me understand the production roles within the industry where I really put my skills to use. Since leaving College, I spent a good six months confused about what I needed to do next and lost my way but I then decided to do what I wanted for a long time which was to set up myself as a sole trader and start a business which I did in March, 2010. It started to pick up speed and I was doing really well up to September, 2009 where I stopped as I started my two year BA Honors course at Edinburgh Napier so currently I'm planning to work between April and September and start my business fresh in summer, 2012 but my main goal is to become a movie maker. 2012 is a big year for me and my family, the mortgage will be paid off for my family home and I will be graduating so an exciting year for sure.
