This is a second test with the Canon 5d Mk II. This time, guitar is miked, into a mixing board, then into the camera's line in. You'll note the camera's auto levels kick in, raising and lowering the levels as the guitar gets louder or quieter. This has the effect of raising the ambient noise (you'll especially note it at the end).

Me playing Peppino D'Agostino's "Lagavullin". Not as smoothly as the first time, but the audio is definitely better than the internal mic.

Check out the HD version (click Watch in HD below the video)!

Oh, again, guitar is a Larrivee D-09.

  • What's the native audio quality of the Canon 5D mark II? 16 bit? 24 bit? How about the mhz? Sounds great btw.

  • 44.1, 16bit. Mono if using the camera's internal mic, stereo if you pipe it in via the mic jack.

    And thanks, btw. :-)

  • I think so, although it's a bit hard to tell as the encoding I used was 5Mbps for this vid, so this isn't really challenging either youtube or vimeo too much.

The mic is an MXL 990, run through a cheap Behringer mixer, with post EQ, reverb, etc done in Premiere. I'm actually pretty pleased with the result, except for the autoleveling at the very end, and the autoleveling that the camera makes with the very first harmonic notes, which sorta screws with their attack...

  • Beautiful! I have a D-09 too, that's now twenty years old, and just sounding better and better all the time.

  • hey man, stumbled across you over at vimeo, and here you are again on youtube :) i think youtubes new HD implementation might be a little better than vimeos.

goegeous audio on this one, can i ask what mic is was that you used? the camera's audio compressor seems actually quite musical here, could have been a lot worse.

  • cool video! thanks for sharing!
