And for everyone wondering how Lincoln could have possibly started the war when the South fired the first shot, the reality of it is the federal troops should have been withdrawn from S.Carolina;their very presence was an act of war, by invading and occupying foreign territory(s. car had secceeded).Lincoln played a political game by leaving them there, looking for an excuse to draw the country into war. (funny, he withdrew all federal garrisons from southern territory but that one) that say alot

Try considering the fact that free labor was, is, and always will be more productive than slave labor. Because the world was industrializing, the level of productivity per worker was rising drastically. The free market would have responded to slavery by making it obsolete.
