An hour later, Joe walked out of the classroom shaking his head.
"What was that about?" David said, grabbing Joe's arm.
Joe shook him off. "Come on clueless, let's go get some food and I'll tell you."
They walked to the cafeteria and each grabbed a burger. David led him to his usual table in the corner. Joe rolled his eyes, "Dude, we have a lot of work to do."
"What are you talking about?" David said in between bites.
"DAVE! Let's start with table," Joe said, motioning all around him. "I understand your constant need to keep attention away from you, but then can we at least sit in the middle of the cafeteria where we'll blend in better than the geeks sitting in the corner?!"
David kept eating.
"Dude, I know you can hear me, so stop."
David sighed. "Why? What good will it do? I asked you to walk me to school, and that's it. Nobody said I had to show you where everything was, or listen to you criticize me all day. I felt bad for you being new and all, so I decided to be nice and show you around. I KNOW they gave you a map, because they always do, even to the returning students. I should've just let you find your way by yourself," David said, gathering his garbage together.
'Dude, dude!" Joe said, putting his hand on David's arm. "Sit down. Listen, I'm sorry. You're right, the criticism I've been giving you has been unfair and one-sided. So listen, thank you for showing me around and I'd really like for us to start to be friends."
"Friends?" David said, pretending to think. He smiled. 'Okay, I guess I can live with that." He started eating the pudding he had also put on his tray. "So what's the story with you?"
"Huh?" Joe said, dropping his burger in surprise.
Selena walked up to their table. "Hey guys, mind if I join you?"
David stared up at her wordless again.
Joe smiled. "Sure, have a seat."
Selena put her tray on David's side of the table, and he recovered enough to slide over for her. He couldn't stop staring at her with his mouth open, however. She smiled at Joe, "I'm sorry, I couldn't help but overhear David ask what your background was, and I have to admit I'm a little curious myself."
Joe coughed and threw a french-fry at David's head. It hit his head and he blinked and looked around to see what had hit him. "What?!"
"Selena here was asking about my background, and I thought you wanted to know about it, too."
"Yes Joe," Selena said, putting her elbow on the table and leaning her chin into her hand. "What's your story?"
Joe leaned back a little bit, and could've sworn he saw Selena batting her eyelashes at him. "Uh....okay. Well, I was born in, um...." he looked around, finally glancing behind him to see a kid wearing a Yankees jersey, "New York City."
"How exciting!" Selena said a little too enthusiastically.
Joe glanced at David, who just shrugged and continued to stare at Selena out of the corner of his eye while continuing to eat his pudding.
"So, you"re a senior?" Selena asked him. "Isn't it kind of weird to be hanging out with juniors?"
"Uh...." Joe said, scrambling to think. "Not really. I was friends with a lot of younger kids back at my old school."
"And what made you leave NYC?" Selena asked, her food still untouched.
"Well, alright. Aren't we curious?" Joe said, stuffing French fries into his mouth and begged David with his eyes to help him.
"Uh....Selena?" David asked her. She looked at him, and again he couldnt speak. "Uh...."
"We have to go," Joe said quickly, gathering his garbage onto his tray and throwing another french-fry at David. He came out of his mist and quickly gathered up his tray, too.
"Where are you going?" Selena said, perking up.
"Uh....library," Joe said quickly.
"The LIBRARY?!" Selena said.
"Yeah, five page history paper on China due tomorrow. Need some research, way behind. BYE!" Joe said, quickly emptying his tray and walking out.
David followed behind him. "Dude, what's wrong? Yeah, Selena and I know each other, but we've never been friends, and this was the ONE TIME she decided to sit with me. AND YOU DECIDED TO LEAVE!"
"Dude, someday I'll explain to you why I had to leave, but right now we have another problem."
"Problem?" they heard a voice say from behind them.
They stopped and turned around slowly. "DEMI?!" Joe said in shock.
