We are comprised of architecture students from NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and some young designers from NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan). We have worked side by side for a week in mid-July to put together an event called "Wonder Breakfast."
For three days we were asked to collect, gather materials, references, and input from experienced designers regarding the idea of "breakfast." The idea was to set up a pop-up breakfast and invite Milanese designers and other locals.
"Wonder Breakfast" is a performance that derives from the concept of displacing the common use of places and everyday objects by playing on the reversal of expectations derived from the senses such as taste, sight and touch and introducing new rituals, new moods and modes of social relations. It is a staged yet playful, international and contemporary rendition of breakfast. For two mornings the breakfast was served for a selected number of guests. Each day we invited different guests and held it in two different locations, which gave us the chance to experience how the guests engaged with the particular arrangement of space and the surprising meals we prepared for them.
We'd like to give a special thanks to Peter Lang, Jim Dart, Stefano Mirti, and Claudio Farina for running the workshop, Natascia Fenoglioand for her food design workshop, Francesco Librizzi and Alessandro Scandurra for providing special insights and all the staff of Il Cubo for their wonderful patience and hospitality!
