We recently sat down with Rik Leemans, chair of the Earth System Science Partnership to find out more about the International Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). We discussed the importance of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services as the foundation issue of this new IPCC-like assessment platform, as well as the role and importance of the assessment in the current scientific climate.

Prof. Dr. Rik Leemans heads the Environmental Systems Analysis group of Wageningen University, directs the WIMEK graduate school and chairs the Earth System Science Partnership. He was involved in the assessment of the IPCC and co-chairs the Response Option Working group of the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment.

The International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change provides international leadership in framing, developing and integrating social science research on global environmental change and promotes the key findings of this research in the policy and scientific fields to help address environmental challenges.
