Indian MP Manish Tewari discusses his meetings with Australian Police officials

In this interview Asialink met with Mr Manish Tewari, a senior Indian politician visiting Australia to meet with officials in the wake of 21-year-old Indian student Nitin Garg's murder on January 3rd 2010.

Mr Tewari is spokesperson of the ruling Congress party and Lok Sabha (Lower House) Member from Jalandharm, northern India. He held the position of president of the Indian Youth Congress from 1998 to 2000

Mr Tewari was an invitee of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and met with Victoria's Deputy Commissioner for Police and various government figures to discuss security measures being employed and review police investigations.

He asserted that the death has had an impact on public perceptions of Australia in India.

'At the back of parents' minds there would be this anxiety and there would be this concern', he said.

However, Mr Tewari believes that Australia's education system is still attractive for students.

'In all democratic societies we do face the same challenges,' he said.

'There is a need to see that the wheels of justice grind efficaciously.'
