such a sad sight, hope they find a final solution to these little basterds...

A heart rending piece of film. Made me want to reach into the screen with tweezers and pinch the mites off. The wonderful, almost mystical bees, so vital to our own survival.

I once read an article where one beekeeper practiced stealing all of his bees' honey in the autumn, and then fed the bees sugar syrup during the winter. His hives were nearly destroyed by varroa mites the following spring. Another beekeeper allowed his colonies to keep an adequate portion of their own stored honey for food during the winter, and in the spring those colonies were thriving with no apparent mite infestation. Could exceesive sugar feeding be one possible cause of mite infestation?

Very interesting clip! That hive needs some serious help with so many phoretic mites. It is heart wrenching to watch. Can you tell I have bee fever bad. LOL
I would like to use a few seconds of this footage for a short news story for a science communication film project for Otago University in New Zealand. Would this be possible? Just to have 10 seconds attached in MPEG2 sent to my email would be really great. Let me know if you mind doing this. Thanks

It's gratifying to see the bees get them off and bite them to death. What size are the cells in this hive?

Yes it is. Thanks,
Cell size in this hive is 5.2mm.
