  • After all these years I still feel I can reccomend this film! Director Stanley Kwan did a great job, Cheung Man-yuk was here at the highest point of her beauty and talent, and Leung kai-fai is also great (Lau Ka-ling too!). The story line is one the most touching ones ever seen on screen, considering that it's a true story and depicted here with a sublime touch of dignity and respect. No doubt, this film stands proudly in the very first row of my favourite ones. Please look for it and enjoy!!

  • @feekeewee --> yeahh! infact the setting was excellent! everything was original and it gives you that "feel". i think lust caution gave that "lack" of feel as compared to this one. stanley kwan is a great director and he knows his period styles very well! the characters portrayed in this movie reflect the characters in the past in terms of the resemblance in looks. the story line is just great a origiinal and nothing like the modern ruanlingyu series.

  • why does she have surname "ruan"???

  • the chinese have many surnames. most of them refer to objects, nouns... they can be colors (huang represents yellow), (lim represents forest), but these are all adapted by our ancestors hundreds of years ago, and almost all of the chinese population around the world uses a chinese surname which is "common" to most people's. Like in Canada, youre most likely to meet Wongs, and even you can find them as far as Malaysia. So, Ruan is just a surname she adopted fr. her father's side.

  • yeahh ruan is cantonese. actress lily li said that when she acted dialogues in her silent films, her mandarin wasnt accurate and had those "canto-accent" in it. luckily it was a silent film and the dialogue was unheard :-)

  • Center Stage, aka Actress, is Maggie Cheung's

solo performance, which won her the prestigious Silver Bear for best actress in Berlin Film Festival in 1992.

Maggie Cheung plays Ruan Ling-yu, who was one of China's biggest silent movie stars in the 1930s.

The film, released in Taiwan in 1990 and Hong Kong in 1991, has been a classic Chinese film, for which Maggie Cheung snatched best actress awards in Berlin and Chicago in 1992.

  • thank you for your comment! maggie cheung is really a talented actress! speaking about ruan lingyu, i have watched "The Goddess" and it really touched my heart. However, I am still searching for the movie "New Woman" by her. Do you have any idea where i can find it?

  • Hi joemb1977, I was talking about Ruan, who was a Cantonese while born in Shanghai.

As to Maggie Cheung, she was born in Hong Kong with her Shanghai roots.

  • ma perchè abbiamo delle pessime distribuzioni in italia?! gran bel film!

  • But I think the surname Ruan(Nguyen) is only in Vietnam. Surprise to know China has ruan too.

  • Did you ever find Ruan Lingyu's "New Woman"? There is a DVD of it for sale on Amazon. The quality of the print is supposed to be really bad, but still worth it. Someone wrote an excellent review of it there.

  • Ok, thanks.
