Alex vs. his nemesis, Joseph Stalin. Alex dreams of becoming a writer and of meeting Annie, his distant American cousin. As a child, Alex observes a group of foreign tourists do something that non-drunk Soviet adults seldom do: they laugh. Alex yearns to become one of them—a free and happy foreigner.
"My Life at First Try" is forthcoming from Counterpoint Press in November 2008.

I just started reading . . . love it not only for the weight of the words but also for its vignette/flash fiction take on remembrance not unlike how our minds and memory really operate . . . go buy this!

Absolutely one of the best books I read this year. Funny and touching. Beautiful language, full of atmosphere.

Looks like a very interesting book. Personal yet social, Russian and yet universal. Good luck!
