X'Aħna Sbieħ Min Jaf Jarana, a Maltese song of the 1930s by C. Satariano, sung by Emmanuele Cilia.

Early in 193I, a group of musicians travelled from the port of Valletta, Malta, to Tunis, to record the very first records of Maltese music. What ensued was a social phenomenon, which took much of society by storm. This is the forgotten story of recording Maltese, folk and popular music in the interwar period.

A 60 page book with 30 tracks is now available. It's an intriguing account of musicians, composers, poets and songwriters who, contracted by the Valletta music agents, were sent to Milan and Tunis to record on the major record labels of the day, including HMV, Polyphon, Odeon and Pathé Records. Recorded music and gramophones became an attractive novelty, which played back local music and altered the Maltese people's perception of themselves forever.

These old songs have now been restored. Concept, production, research and story writing by Andrew Alamango.

This is one of 30 old Maltese songs available on two CDs. You can order them from here:

This song is copyrighted by 2010 Filfla Records. Sincere thanks to Andrew Alamango for giving us permission to use it in this video which shows folkloristic photos of Maltese men and women.

  • @1952Marisa To many of us, these songs are very precious because of the beautiful memories they bring us. Thanks Marisa.

  • I absolutely love this song and you sure selected the right pictures .

    Thank you Alfred.

  • @97641282 I brings many memories John. It used to be played very often when we were young. Thanks.

  • This was a very interesting historical background of the preservation of folk music in Malta. I can see where it would help the Maltese appreciate their musical heritage and aid in self identity. The graphics showing old customs and costumes were very informative. Thank you for this bit of history Alfred.

  • @ShirleyJean1000 Thanks Shilrey. This is one of many that used to be played a lot when I was a kid. I'm sure many Maltese would appreciated hearing it again. Andrew Alamango collected some very old Maltese songs and had them cleaned and reproduced exceptionally well. His work was extensively praised on local media.

How to translate "X'ahna sbieh min jaf jarana"? - "Look how nice we are" - humoristic bragging.
