My wife had me come look when she had picked up a spider and it had lost it's leg. The leg continued to move after it had been detached from the body of the spider. What could cause this?
Some spiders can detatch their own legs as a distraction to predators, there are 'pacemakers' at the end of the first long segment of their legs, which send singnals via the nerves to the muscles to extend the leg and then the leg relaxes between signals.
