Music & Life: Alan Watts

"You can't catch a wave in a bucket and walk off with it," teaches Alan Watts, "and so, you cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you persist in trying to." In Learning the Human Game, Watts starts with this Taoist insight; then takes his audience into a mind-expanding inquiry into the human condition. This four-session collection offers the best of Watts' celebrated Tao of Philosophy lecture series, recorded during live seminars and radio broadcasts spanning two decades. Here, Watts offers clear delineations of Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu teachings on what it means to be human; insights into the hidden order behind the apparent chaos of the universe; what nature can teach us about how to live our lives, and much more. Perhaps more than anyone else this century, Alan Watts is credited with helping the modern West gain access to the spiritual traditions of the Far East. Now, join this renowned scholar and beloved "spiritual entertainer" at his best, offering his listeners a rich and completely unpredictable investigation into our place in the cosmos and our great common task -- at once formidable and effortless: Learning the Human Game.

  • @theredpillmedia, Your video's are lovely. I enjoy them immensely, the music just makes it hard for me to relax and take in the truths AW shares. If you know of sites that do not have music please share. I have looked and have not yet found any.

  • @sunjaknat1229 Thank you for your comments. I do understand your point. Perhaps these two links may help. They are for playlists of Alan Watts Philosophical Discourse series. They appear to be the original full recordings, not edited, nor with music added.

    I hope that helps. Peace.

  • I would like very much for the background music to cease. The music detracts greatly from this man's very important words.

  • @sunjaknat1229 I actually think the music enhances it, so there you go, the score is one-all! He does say that life is a dance, so music can be a part of that dance (although it doesnt have to be, sure). Each to their own though. Also, can I suggest the search function. There are a lot of Alan Watts videos on YouTube. Perhaps you'll find the one that suits you better.

  • I say these are perfect just as they are. Thank you.

  • @theredpillmedia Thank you very much..

  • Continued...Allow your mind to take in one thing at a time. There in lies the problem with much of society today spiritually, socially and intellectually we try too much to multitask and miss the beauty and intimacy of the oneness.

To the last person...I disagree, Allan Watts words are lessons far from nonsense.

  • I enjoy music, in the right context and setting. I am sure many of you can really relate to the music and find peace with the rhythm. I can't, I cannot, in any setting, have music playing whilst someone talks it drowns out the speaker for me. I don't listen to the radio and have a conversation either. Actually adding music seems to be the antithesis of what Buddhism teaches. When we fill our minds with multiple things we lose the essence of things. Being here and now means just that.
