Rothbury Woooo...

jerry Garcia was clever. he probably wanted the Dead's performance to be hard to find. Like the exclabur in Sherwood Forest. Green

This is not the best live recording of the Grateful Dead's cover version of Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried." There are better versions out there. It is good to listen to for the historical significance.

i've been listening to the woodstock playlist today, st. stephen, mama tried, technical difficulties, dark star, high times, and lovelight...and in my opinion, not a bad performance considering the chaos around the stage...and the crowd seems a bit rude 'sit down, stand up' and overall fussy from not enough sleep or food or hygiene.
i would say that the technical difficulties interlude hearkens to acid test free association, don't understand the negative reviews after hearing for myself.

Even though this is certainly not one of the Dead's best performances, it's still one of the best at Woodstock. It's a fucking disgrace that it took forty years for the producers to include ONE of the songs hidden deep within the bonus footage when they included Sha Na Na AND Country Joe in the original cut. Janis was sub-par as well but it didn't keep her performance out of the movie.
I mean, did they honestly expect the Dead to refrain from drug use AT FUCKING WOODSTOCK?! Give me a break.
