Here is one of my own songs performed at a local church.

Recorded July 5, 2009. Featuring Matthew Koonz on guitar, Tom Dootz on violin, and Dave Bub on djembe.

As always, I apologize about the audio and video quality. I had nothing to do with either.

  • Great point. I have witnessed that too.

  • I definitely see where you're coming from, though. I have gotten similar comments from certain individuals who are among the top songwriters in the field. I took them as high praise comments because "typical" is exactly what I was going for.

Thanks again for dropping by my channel.

  • I know what you mean. I used to think the same way until I discovered that if it was truly a good song, the congregation would get it no matter what was going on musically. I understand and I'm not trying to pick apart your song. It is very good and very well done. Just wanted to challenge your brain a little. thanks for the replies.

  • Sure, I appreciate that you took the time out to give your opinion. I think a good debate it how we keep each other in check musically.

I agree. With a really good song, it doesn't always matter the musicality. Although, I do feel that you need a good congregation too. I also think this is why the typical watered-down Chris Tomlin songs are very popular with larger churches. I've seen first hand good songs go over poorly simply because it wasn't the congregation's style.

  • Please don't misunderstand me. My intention was to give you an honest educated evaluation. I guess what I am trying to say is that personal reflection and worship are one in the same. As an example, the hymn It Is Well is a personal reflection and a worship song. Studying the chord progressions you will see that they were anything but typical for that time period. What I hear you saying is that the song is dumbed down because it's simply a worship song. Again, I say great work.

  • Well, to be honest, yeah, I have found that congregational worship songs do have to be watered down a bit musically because the intention is for the entire congregation to easily learn them and eventually be able to sing along without alienating anyone for your style of music.

Some of my other work (not posted yet) is somewhat more progressive, but I would never expect a congregation to worship along with me. I would hope that it would happen, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it.

  • Wow!! amazing!

    you seriously have a gift!

  • Ah, but there is a difference between a worship song and a personal reflection song. They're two entirely different things, and a successful artist will know when each has its place. A reflection typically does not have a place in a worship set.

This song is a worship song. The reason these songs are typical is because that is how they are intended to be. There's nothing overly difficult to understand here because it's not supposed to be.

I appreciate your willingness to be critical, though.

  • Great vocal. Interesting combination of instruments. Chord progression is typical. Message is typical. I believe

the challenge for the new Christian artist is to write with a more revealing reflection of personal trials and temptations and lay ourselves out in the music we write. Here I am at the altar of God is great but what brought you there? What inside you draws you to the altar? Just friendly suggestions. Great job though. Keep up the great work.

  • AMEN! Beautiful song and wonderful message. What church are you singing at?
