Surely, if we have free will , we should be able to choose not to love him without the fear of eternal damnation ?.. and i don't accept Jesus as my savior for a number of reasons, one, there is no contemporary historical evidence he existed, two, if he existed and is god, he's a megalomaniac who doesn't deserve love and three, what do i need saving from ?, is this loving, merciful god going to punish me simply for not believing an unbelievable story written 2000 years ago by unknown authors ?
