the cops were doing there job, evan if you think they are assholes. that situation can turn deadly if the protester had had weapons, because they had nothing to loose. the cops uses brute force because they were out numbered, but you would do the same. yes the cops could have been nicer but, you be in that situation and you will be angry too. the cops pulling people out of the crowd, were probably anti-terrriorist targeting who they thought were the leaders of the group.
