Living in this day in age I see a lot of changes as compared to previous ones. We have a wide range of censorship and different views that it is almost impossible to take sides. I choose this song because it effected me in my own way. The lyrics are powerful in my mind now as it was growing up in the reality that we call life. As a senior in high school 10 years ago, and long before I saw truth as it really is, I did a report on censorship and violence in the media. It went on to talk of the massive number of action movies that were flooding the market in that time, the complaints of many to censor the images and the news stories that were around during that time period.
It's interesting I would pick up on that so long ago.
Now, today, I see a new variety of these things flooding the market once again. Now I see a large base of action and horror movies as well as an increased number of more violent video games. We are consumed by these ideas, maybe not all of us but a lot of us. I see us as "accepting this as a normal reality". The more frequent graphic images are portrayed to us the more normal it seems to become.
Meanwhile we see violent acts in the news such as the kidnapping and brutal slaying of some of our vets when they come home by another vet. We have reports of increasing numbers of gang violence (drive by's, stabbings, beatings, etc), bank robberies, car thefts, innocent children being slain, and suicides by actors, singers and, often now, Veterans.
How many of you readers love to kick back with popcorn and check out the newest horror or action movie? Rambo, Die Hard, Band of Brothers, Platoon, See No Evil, Halloween, The Eye, The Ring, Menace To Society, Set it Off, Light it Up, etc.
How many gamers out there love the new hit video games? Medal of Honor, House of the Dead, Resident Evil, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Soldier of Fortune, Grand Theft Auto, etc.
How many of us do not like the small town news of, lets say, the county pig won a trophy for its prize winning values, as opposed to a story with some sort of violence like a man being arrested for assaulting his wife or a child was murdered by his parent, or abduction, etc.
What I am saying is we all have some sort of interest in this yet we tend to look the other direction when we start talking about innocent victims and the loss of our troops in Iraq. It drives me nuts. These images are censored from the media because it is too horrific. Or barely mentioned to even give the smallest effect of the true meaning of the story. Why do we, Americans, love brutal slayings on television and video games and read the stories of these acts of violence in our papers? Why do we feel the need to not mourne for the loss of the American families who made the ultimate sacrifice to fight in our Armed Forces? Or feel the pain and the agony of the innocent people whose families are bleeding or suffering day to day due to the sight of it. Its in their face. Everyday.
This is what we watch, do, say, and sometimes dream. This is what we, apparent by the vast sales of these products and ratings, love the most and crave. This is what we vote for.
