Ivan Stiles playing the musical saw to accompany autoharp players singing and playing the song In The Garden, a 1912 Christian hymn by Charles Austin Miles.

Ivan Stiles is known in autoharp circles across the country as an autoharpist of unique ability, not just as a performer, but also as a recording artist and instructor. He performs nationwide at fairs, festivals, coffee houses, colleges, and clubs. In addition to the autoharp, he plays the Appalachian dulcimer, bowed psaltery, and musical saw. To learn more about him, his history, buy a CD, or see the concert schedule of performer/entertainer Ivan Stiles visit his website at: http://www.ivanstiles.com/music.html

He has 4 recordings: Rounding Pickering Bend, Pickin' On The Porch, and Promises Kept ~ all featuring the autoharp. The 4th CD, Pennsylvania Sawyer, features the musical saw.

This late night Gospel Jam is led by Karla Armstrong. She sells her Gospel Jam Notebook: I Will Sing of My Redeemer that has 80 hymns with the lyrics and chord arrangements for playing the songs on the autoharp. Her website is:

You may have seen Ivan since he has given concerts and workshops at such places as the Walnut Valley Festival, Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering, Willamette Valley Autoharp Gathering, Cranberry Dulcimer Gathering, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Stringalong Weekends, California Traditional Music Society Summer Solstice, Augusta Heritage Arts Workshops, Swannanoa Gathering, Brandywine Mountain Music Convention, John C. Campbell Folk School, and the Ozark Folk Center.

The autoharps Karla plays have 37 strings which are tuned to either a diatonic or chromatic scale. Chords and individual melody notes are obtained by depressing the appropriate chord button and then strumming or plucking the desired note(s). On the back of Karla's first custom instrument, made by George Orthey, is woodburned the music verse:"...upon the harp will I praise Thee, O God, my God!" (Psalm 43:4)
