I've always gauged a necks thickness and shape by the playing positions of the hands. Pickup your guitar, play a standard "D" triad or "C" chord. Notice the position of your hand? Your thumb is rarely in the first position or in the first fret area of the back of the neck.
@Realfi Been doing this type of work since I was 14 and yes, I used to work a lot slower in the beginning. It's cool because now it feels like sculpting or even dancing. Quite enjoyable!
