  • First of all its all a mind game. Think about it. "THE WAR ON TERROR" no different than saying "THE WAR ON CRIME". How do you win that. When is the game over. Hell the people im seeing on t.v. and in person don't even have uniforms. That's the threat? or is that the Lie? We are blinded. Our economy is going downward and we want to spend more money fighting guys that are wearing jeans and sneakers for the 80s. By the way im a veteran who has been deployed to these deserts more than once.

  • Actually leaving now would not be a horribly bad idea. It is certainly better than the option of staying there indefinately.

We should not forget, however, that the Iraqi military has itself said it wants some more time to train with American troops and get up to par.

Under optimal conditions, I'd actually think a phased withdrawal starting now and finishing 3 years from now would be best, but the American economy cannot sustain the occupation anymore.

  • Well we have to leave sometime, so why not now? Or should we listen to Psycho mccain and stay there for a hundred years?

  • Anarchy would have reigned, bloodshed and poverty as a ruthless power battle broke out would have been horrible and it would be a fertile breeding ground for Al Qaeda.

If the U.S. had just left soon after smashing Saddam's regime, Iraq would have quickly become as infected with Al Qaeda as pre-2001 Afghanistan.

Not to mention the global backlash at the U.S. for not taking responsibility for the mess they created.

  • That does not change the fact that they're there now. Leaving while Iraq was unstable is not going to make them magically go away.

Don't get me wrong. The U.S. should never have invaded Iraq, and their continued presence there causes a degree of resentment in the Arab world. And I believe that by the time the next president is elected troops should start being withdrawn.

However, just up and leaving Iraq 2-3 years ago would have been foolish.

  • I can't belive you said that either. There was no Queda in Iraq before the americans started a war there.

  • What Joe missed was that Obama, in the debate, was responding to a question about whether he would send troops in if there was *insurrection or civil war* in Iraq. Obama added Al Qaeda as the likely source of this.

  • I can't believe I'm saying this, but remember 9/11. Allowing Al Qaeda to prosper is detrimental to American national security due to their frequent use of suicide bombers in many countries, as well as their extremist doctrine which, among other things, they force upon children through Madrassahs (a form of religious school, but way more extreme than anything the west ever concocted).

  • yea....but if buch and mc cain created the problem in first place, there is reson to believe they would do it again!

  • How would al Queda in Iraq be a problem to the US, if they left it?
