This film documents some of the work undertaken by children and teachers at Sherwood Park Primary school in Tunbridge Wells in 1987. The film exemplifies an approach to learning and school that were possible prior to the changes introduced by the Conservative Government of Margaret Thatcher. Central to this approach is the understanding that, before any other consideration, children must be put at the centre of an education policy. The present may be a good time to restore these beliefs because it is clear from statistics, from reports and from listening to children and to parents that twenty years of 'initiatives' has left a desolation of reluctant children, confused parents, desperate teachers and most alarmingly a systemic failure from successive governments. It is related to the Task of the Teacher film by Stuart McKears and Lorna Ridgeway.
