Video: The Coast Guard towed a 76-foot fishing vessel to safety after the vessel became disabled near Nantucket early morning Jan. 8, 2007.

The Lady of Grace with four crew members on board, contacted the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center at 3:34 a.m. and reported they were without power and drifting approximately 10 miles east of Great Point, Nantucket.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Brant Point on Nantucket launched a 47-foot motor life boat to take the vessel in tow. The 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel departed Woods Hole, MA and took over towing operations at 11:30 a.m. and towed the Lady of Grace to calmer waters east of Edgartown, where the fishing boat anchored for the evening. The Sanibel remained on scene throughout the night to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew.

At the time of the tow winds were reported to be at gale force strength with 30 to 35 knots and seas were heavy at 8 to 10 feet.

  • jaysims, you werent even on board, and the coast guard didnt get blamed because there was a post-sar boarding right after that case and nothing was found wrong with their liferift. and that liferaft didnt deploy when the two weeks later they sunk, because it was covered with ice, which was that crews fault

  • @JaySims747 I feel ya..., I was in the 47' from Brant Point and was on that rescue seen here, I was also on the rescue mission when the Grace sank. Terrible..

  • wish I had $100 for every time I did that.

  • The different colors of hard hats are different levels of qualifications white is the most qualified (BM1, BMC, officer) yellow is the second most qualified (BM3, BM2, qualified non-rate) and blue is least qualified (SN/SA)

  • Why is one guy not wearing a hard hat, one yellow, and the rest blue? What do the colors mean?

  • Boy do I remember that exhaust coming over the fantail well. It was bad.

  • The Cutter there is the Sanibel, I was part of her crew during that time, as a Seaman (Deck Force, blue helmets)

    When I heard the Grace went down two weeks later, it was kinda tough to hear... some reason, USCG got blamed for the Grace's loss... figure that out.
