I just got my beautiful standardbred.. He is unraced though.. Just turned 4yrs old and still has some filling out to do.. He is all leg and head and I just love it.. His personality is just so cool, calm and collected.. Awesome horses.

@Heaven72 I just got a 15hh standardbred, he is awesome, such an expressive trot on him and lovely jump (mind you that was over a pole on the ground, he thought he ahd to jump bless him)

i have a 18hh, 8yr old Standie. He was severely beaten and neglected as a youngster. I've had him for 3 year's in april, this is my second year riding him. Last year he completed pony club, pony cub camp, a 20km endurance ride (came 3rd out of 18 horses) we do XC, jumping and slowly getting into dressage. We now have our own instructor and he has come so far! I have been told he does'nt have the typical flat hindquarter's, but rounded suited to dressage? tomorrow is our 2nd endurance ride! :)

I love love love Standardbreds, I leased one for 3 years and bought one of my very own this past July. I don't understand why people think they are only good for racing, They have wonderful temperments, big hearts and are SMART. My new boy is virtually bombproof I haven't found ANYTHING that scares him :) we're going to start training to do endurance and competitive trail riding, we're also going to learn to jump! :D

What I like most about this video, is your comment. Although most horses can do anything, I believe Standardbreds can do pretty much everything very well. About cantering, my Standy learned it naturally. I just let him explore when I was working with him. If he wanted to canter with me on him I didn't stop him at first, I didn't want to break his new spirit. Then I began controlling him more and it's amazing in what little time it's taken us to get to where we are.
He's about 17.2/17.3hh - definitely a big boy :)

would it be possible to retrain a standardbred as a barrel racing horse?

I don't see why not - you'd want to look for a Standie with the right body type and attitude for barrel racing though :-)
