Maya Plisetskaya always dreamed of dancing the role of Carmen and had approached Shostokovich for a score. He demurred out of respect for Bizets celebrated opera. It was eventually Plisetskayas husband Rodion Shchedrin who agreed to provide the music after seeing some of the initial rehearsals with his wife and the choreographer Alberto Alonso. His Carmen Suite Ballet, based on Bizet, was a perfect complement to Alonsos choreography and, in its theatricality, a showcase for Plisetskayas considerable dramatic gifts. Plisetskaya's Don Jose is the brilliant dramatic dancer, Nicolai Fadeyechv. Sergei Radchenko dances the role of the Bullfighter. The Carmen Suite Ballet, one of the darkest settings of Mérimées tragic story, deeply symbolic and overtly sensual, premiered at the Bolshoi Ballet on April 20, 1967.
Bonus segments feature Plisetskaya in performances of The Dying Swan, Raymonda Variations, and Bach Prelude.

I don't know how some people put Zakharova over Plisetskaya. There's no comparison. Personally I do Love Ms. Zakharova, she's so fresh, and modern like avant-garde. But Ms. Plisetskaya will remain as a legend and as an amazing dancer. She's my favourite...

Plisetskaya is truly a legend, her dancing was magic, Nirvana and just breathtaking. I will carry to my last day the memories of watching her dance at the Metropolitan in NY in the early 70's, Dying Swan that had 3 encores and a 15 minutes standing ovation, whith non stop tears in my eyes, and this very same "Carmen", one had to be there to believe it.

She is ONE in history, Unmatched, and I saw them all,period!!! Thank you Ms. Plisetskaya from the bottom of my heart.

@lalaisgarcia I agree. It's hard to compare the two when they are just...completely different. I love Svetlana's version because of the grace and amazing technical skill she has, I mean, her feet! But Plisetskaya is very fun and it feels like she's dancing for herself and to have fun. It's just hard to compare because of the time period, where now, everything is about technical perfection.

I'm no dancer but as a consumer Zakharova is a far cry from Plisetskaya. Plisetskaya is a natural. She looks like she is having so much fun and she is in enticing to watch. Zakharova is so very technical. I was bored watching her version of Carmen.
