The guy at the very beginning is Stanley Unwin, a British comedian and comic writer, and the inventor of his own language, "Unwinese," a mangled form of English in which many of the words were corrupted in playful and humorous ways.
1968 he narrated the story of "Happiness Stan" on side two of The Small Faces' LP Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.
info checked with Wikipedia.
A Roy Wood's Wizzard B-side (of "Rock 'N Roll Winter") is titled "Dream of Unwin"
Jeff Lynne joined after Carl Wayne left. Carl left because the concept of ELO, for him, was moving too far from their pop-rock hits. The ELO concept was a logical progression for what The Ilde Race was doing so Jeff joined.
Incidentially, there's a story that The Move gave interviews that they would break up if their next single (Blackberry Way) didn't go to number one. It did. Their only number one single.
Jeff Lynne was original invited The Move when Trevor Burton quit. Trevor quit because this song was way too pop for him just like Eric Clapton quit The Yardbirds are the success of "For Your Love".

A haunting song - it sounded even better with the strings added, on the single, which was a UK no. 1 in '69.
