Chances are that the microphone may not work, not sure about Webster machines but many phongraph cartridges and microphones used rochelle salt crystals that go bad over time.
The electronics in most tube equipment is often dead or unsable until it is rebuilt, especially radios, TVs, phongraphs, and of course wire and recorders of the 1940s and 50s. Fortunately most of the problem components are capacitors and resistors that are easily found and cheap to replace. I've been keeping my eyes open for a wire recorder, I now have a record cutter and several reel to reel tape machines but no wire recorder yet.
hello friends I have 20 tapes of wire, I know they have not recorded because the player ... I have no tapes are in their original box webster-chicago ... that the price could sell? regards
IT's amazing just how good these old Webster recorders sound. I've got the same model, but the electronics were dead, so i wired the head directly to a 1/4" phone jack and sent the signal to a recording console, took a guesstimate at the EQ curve, and got astounding results. This is a really pristine example. Bravo!
@CassetteMaster .....Shame I only read this now(1 year later), as I have one of these Mics which I am going to sell off,but I don't know much about them, i.e: Age & Value?.....
WOW! That sounds quite good! I found the same model machine yesterday, but no top cover or mic for it. I will work (I did have to replace the power switch), but audio is not very loud, it would need the paper caps replaced.

I've never heard a Webster Chi cargo wire recorder sounding this good before, most of them sound weak and tinny, but this one sounds really good.
