"No. No, that one." I smile as Gage grabs my hand and pulls it to the left under the Fanta Strawberry. I push the button and let the cup fill. It clicks and I pull the cup away. I grab a lid and put it on the cup before handing it to Gage. She snatches her cup from my hand, shoves a straw into the lid, and drinks it like she breaths Fanta Strawberry.
"Slow down Gage." I pull the straw out of her mouth and she looks at me with her best pouting face. "You know what caffeine does to you." She flashes me a huge smile and goes back to inhaling her drink. I chuckle slightly and turn back to the soda fountain.
"Oh!" I say as I turn into a man carrying his drink. The lid pops off and the cup scrunches together sending his Coke spraying everywhere. I quickly grab napkins from beside the soda fountain. "I'm so sorry!" I hand them to him.
"It's okay," he says between chuckles. I look up at him. He's laughing, which is weird. People usually don't laugh when you cover them with their drink, especially when they're strangers. I study the man's face. His dark, short, curly, brown hair makes my fingers tingle at the sight of it, almost like I've run my fingers through it before. Creepy, I know but it feels like I have. Honestly! His deep brown eyes, I could swim in them for hours but it feels like I already have. The slight scruff above his upper lip and on his chin, why do I get the feeling I've kissed his perfect dark pink lips? His smile, his mischievous smile, his loose hanging t-shirt, the way he stands with his hands in his pockets, his dark, but fading around the knees blue jeans. It all seems way too familiar. I know I know him. I just can't remember how. Oh, gosh Demi, say something. You're standing here gawking at him.
"Are you okay?" Not that "something", stupid! I brush my dark brown bangs behind my right ear.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he pauses, like now he recognizes me. Wow, his lips sure are perfect! Stop, it Demi! You can't like him, you've got a kid. Speaking of which...
"Gage!" I call out for my daughter.
"Gage?" The man wonders to himself and his gaze drifts. "That's a pretty name," he smiles.
"Thanks," I smile back. I turn around sharply. "Gage!" I call for my daughter again. Before I can blink, she's clinging to my left arm.
"Yeah Mommy?" She looks up at me with her big brown eyes and I melt. No one else in the world exists except me and Gage. Her deep brown eyes make me fall under her innocent spell every time I look at them, just like... her father.
"Joe!" I turn back around to the man. He's rubbing his shirt with a napkin but I completely disregard that as I fling my arms around his neck.
"Joe? Yeah, that's me. Um," he stutters. "Do I know you?" I release my grip and fall to the floor.
"You mean," I whisper quietly as I look up into the chocolate eyes that I swam in for four years. They don't share the same magic at this moment and my heart sinks. "You don't recognize me?" He shakes his head lightly. His eyebrows are knit together, why is he confused? I reach for his right hand but her jerks it back. "Joe," I smile as I take a step toward him and look into his eyes. "It's Demi," I whisper to him but keep my smile. He scrunches his face, thinking about the name and then his eyes grow wide. His face floods with happiness.
"Demi!" He shouts happily as he wraps his arms around me and pulls me into his chest. I wrap my arms around his neck as tears of joy peek out of my eyes. "I missed you." Joe whispers into my right ear. His breath dances across my skin and sends a shiver up my spine.
"I missed you too Joe," I whisper back into his right ear. He hugs me tighter so I wrap my arms farther around his neck. Five years I've waited for him to come running back to me, but when I left we both lost hope. With Gage on the way I thought the best thing to do was to leave Joe so his career wouldn't be affected by our daughter. Oh my gosh Gage! Joe doesn't know she exists! He doesn't know he has a daughter! Oh crap! A little hand tugs on my left arm and I break away from Joe and look down at Gage. She motions for me to lean down so I do. She cups my left ear in both her hands.
"Mommy," she whispers into my ear. Her breath tickles, just like Joe's, and a shiver shoots up my spine again. "Who's he?" She lets go of my ear and I stand up straight. Gage points at Joe with her right index finger while she hides her eyes with her brown bangs. I look at Joe, he looks at me confused, and I smile at him.
"Joe," I take his right hand and smile casually. "Honey this is your daughter, Gage." I take Gage's left hand. "Gage, Sweetie this is your daddy." I bring their hands together and connect them. Their skin touches and Gage jumps.
