Earl was born and raised in St. Louis. He volunteered for the army in September of 1940 at the age of 17. He fought the Japanese in the Phillipines for about 30 days under General Douglas Macarthur. When it began to look bad for the Americans, Macarthur was evacuated and General Wainwright took his place. In the interest of minimizing casualties, Wainwright surrendered. Szwabo, along with thousands of others, was taken prisoner for 42 months, in which he was transported to Manila and then Japan. Szwabo describes, in three parts, the atrocities of being a POW by the Japanese.
