This is a video I've been wanting to do for quite some time.

This goes out to American atheists; You who live in a supposedly free country, a western democracy, land of the free etc etc...

You have had a president state that atheists are not real americans.

Driving down the freeway is depressing as hell, because not only is do those billboards tell you how evil you are, it gives the impression that you are alone.

You could lose your family, friends, lovers or jobs by declaring your atheism; Certainly we have an excellent example of what happens when someones atheism is known about at their work in GrapplingIgnorance:

You're marginalised, feared and distrusted; Yet still you speak out.

I applaud your bravery

  • I don't like how some atheists don't like you talking about God then complain about having Freedom of Religion.

  • @StormHorse4

I don't like how some theists seem to think that us wishing to have the freedom to declare that we are atheists without fear of persecution is somehow ignoring freedom of religion (and seem to miss the point that it's also freedom from religion should we choose it).

"while we are still being persecuted, at least Christians are not killing us anymore"

Or unless you're an abortion doctor.

  • While American aTheists have it somewhat tough, as you explained, the biggest heroes are aTheists living in Muslim countries where one can be executed for unbelief. Yes, this used to be the case in Christian countries as well but, while we are still being persecuted, at least Christians are not killing us anymore, unless we're also homosexual.

  • Sick comedy: A Scientology ad was attached to the video....LOL

It isn't as bad as it once was and it is clear that there are more people thinking. I was even able to get my religious aunt to actually consider the idiocy of various claims made, it was clear that she hadn't actually read what was written in the bible.

The greatest challenge I am finding is not belief, but the general ignorance that allows belief.

  • Thank you so much. It was heartening to hear this. Made my week!

  • The religious issue is not a countrywide issue in the United States and there is a lot more freedom than you would think. Certainly there are places where there is intolerance against atheists and there are too many politicians try to push their religious agenda but largely it is not the case.

And I'm sorry but I do not agree that the UK is more tolerant of atheism. That is certanly not my experience up here in Scotland, where you dare not mention atheism in some places.

  • Cook and eat all humans who openly believe in god.

  • @myfroggyrulz All that being said...on behalf of those in the US who DO suffer as you have mentioned (because it does happen here, just not as often as the media portrays), thank you for your support!

  • @myfroggyrulz ...The only reason it's hitting mainstream now is because so many famous are "coming out" as the atheists that so many of us have been living as for our entire lives. I have no qualms about sharing my views to anyone really...but then I am not a politician, an actor, or even a school teacher. I have lived in several states in the union during my 36 years in this country and in that time seen 1 religious billboard and that travesty was bought by the Harold Camping group.

  • As an atheist in America I am anything but quiet. I have never held back when letting others know my opinion about religion and using scientific evidence to back it up. I have never lost any friends, been disowned by any of my family and any relationship I have had in my past has ended for reasons that have nothing to do with my [lack of] religion. While there are some places in this country (particularly the bible belt) where it MAY happen it certainly isn't everywhere...

  • @SoretaYuki

The Christian mob is especially hateful around election time and that time is coming. . .However, unless critical thinkers stand up for reason, the insanity and conflicts in and between the invisible friend cults of the world will provoke the death and destruction of millions.

  • Well said... but this is brave, braver than I am: watch?v=B1a3J3LQhUs

  • i hate living in America. circular logic rules and those of us who care enough to speak up and try to change things are thrown away as trash. "i don't want to be unequally yoked" she says while giving you a disgusted look. fuck these people who pass, and propagate their religion as law and truth. i want out.
