Affnan, according to the fan laws of fluids, blocking the flow with a valve will decrease the amp draw of the motor because it is doing less work (moving an amount of fluid). This could be better for the pump. If you restrict it so much that it overheats, this would be a problem. See if that is correct. Empirical testing should show reduced current draw when restricted. Perhaps, if the fluid causes extreme static pressure increase, this might be wrong. I know it is true with air as the fluid.

i am really interested with the aquaponics and will start this system early of january. im quite concerned of the electric bill though, should you be running the pumps 24/7 to water the plants or just till the water level is just an inch below the top of the gravel? Thanks.

@KBMemon Hi KB,, on breather tube siphon I cannot comment because I don't practice it. Maybe need to do some cleaning, other that that I can't advise any. The Siphon with funnel reducer I don't experience any problem that can't be fix yet.

Oh and the standpipe is just an inch below the media, I ran short of media :/
Great stuff. I was wondering, why don't you use a snorkel for your siphon? I've been doing some research, and the siphons on youtube don't have snorkels, but seem to work fine, however the literature I'm reading says that these siphons should use a snorkel. Thanks

@hippietrain The siphon using snorkel is of different design, this one do away with it due to the shape of the inlet its not necessary to have the snorkel.

Hey Affnan, my siphon is also about 12 inches high, the bell is 12 inches I think, the standpipe is 9and a half inches high in the GB. Its been acting sticky lately but usually it cuts off just fine thanks to the breather tube on it.

@KBMemon If you have breather tube on your siphon, it should work. Just ensure nothing block the tube, just do some occasional cleaning. I don't use this type so I guess that the only maintenance you should do on it.
