Seven days of competition -- seven days of flying fun!
Corryong Cup is famous for its feel-good factor, with over 70 competition pilots and around 10 free-flyers sharing in the spirit of the event and their common passion for flying.
Each morning the pilots would assemble at the local pub for an initial weather briefing and recap of the previous day, with recognition of the achievements of the pilots and the generous support pilots were giving each other. This was then followed by a briefing on the mountain launch later in the day where the flying course for the day would be decided by the Task Committee along with the launch order. There was always good buzz on the hill each day with pilots busily set-up in anticipation of more great flying, plenty of camaraderie, and chilling-out waiting for conditions to come on and everyone to get off the hill.
Though I didn't come close to winning any of the daily flying tasks I had a ball the entire week and our group of Team Comp Virgins (all being first-timers) supporting each other before launch and with retrieves from goal and from local paddocks in the region.
The recent high rainfall in the valley stifled the generation of thermals and dropped the cloud base lower than it has been in previous years. The pilots who had perfected coring the thermals and willing to scratch long and low seeking and waiting for lift normally got the results.
There was great flying by everyone and this video captures just a small part of it! The bulk of pilots stayed at the Colac Colac caravan park and in the evening would hang out and catch up on who had flown where and share a beer over a bbq.
Congratulations to all the pilots, and especially Shannon and Sam as 2011 Winners of the Floater/Open flying groups and a big thank you to the sponsors and organisers along with the many volunteers (most of who were also pilots flying in the comp) that made it all possible and giving all the pilots such a fantastic experience.
All perfect. Cam angles, music, fly site, weather...

@chiefishere thanks Chiefishere - it is a very popular competition - this year was a little harder to get long distances as thermals were suppressed with the wet weather beforehand and a few days with inversions. Registration for next years comp actually opens tomorrow and the 70 places fill in a day or so due to the high demand. I'm looking forward to filming this upcoming comp if i can get a place quickly enough. Thanks for posting and happy flying!

Hey what brand and model is your hand glider?
JulioCastagnino 8 months ago
@JulioCastagnino hi Julio, this is a Fun190 from Airborne in Australia. It is a great beginners glider, or glider for flying on the sand dunes for any type of pilot. It isn't really the best 'cross country' glider, so this competition has a special category for the 'floaters' like mine, with easier tasks than the high performance gliders. The Fun190 (also comes in larger and smaller) is a very forgiving glider and recommended for beginners.

@MrAndrew1101 Thanks, I've been looking for a hang glider this days but i've never ridden one before. I wanna get into this so bad! I live in peru so its gonna be kinda hard to get one over here. Wich american glider would yo recommend me? My weigh is like 63 Kg. About 146 pounds i think. Thanks again!

@JulioCastagnino hey Julio, the best advice I can give you is to learn hang gliding through an instructor, who will be able to guide you on what sort, and what size, of glider best suits you. It would be dangerous to do it any other way as there are a lot of subtleties involved. Good luck!
