Check out a more current video, displaying new developements:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6PKmBfvCeQ

this video shows a prototype version of a project called vinyl+.

the data(rotation speed, needle position) i get out of a white timecode vinyl is not only used to control sound but also animations which are projected directly on the vinyl itself.

in this short demo i define objects which trigger samples and change their appearance when "hit" by the needle.

the timecode's speed data controls rotation, colors and sample pitch.
by reading out the timecode's needle position the computer can tell "exactly" when a virtual object is being hit by the turntables needle.

please note that there is no camera tracking involved!

ingredients:
turntable
white timecode vinyl
audio interface
computer
xwax pd external (thanks to jan hackl(ayim/broken rules))
processing

  • this is nuts is till havnt figured it out, how does the projector know where you drop the needle?

  • @aornela1 the timecode also incorporates position data

  • ok so the computer isnt recognizing the images as sound its creating images from the sounds as an overlay?

  • @strgzr53 sound gets generated when a virtuell object touches the (virtual) needle

  • @Meteotrance yes, regular white traktor timecode vinyl + video projector

  • If you really want to market this you should display solid waveforms and possibly BPM and pitch, matching up to what people would normally see on their DVS.

  • reminds me popcorn
