Simon Hughes has been and continues to be one of the most high profile and widely respected Liberal Democrat MPs since the party was formed. He joined the party in 1971 inspired by campaigns on international justice in places such as South Africa and Palestine.

Hughes read law at Cambridge and was called to the bar in 1974. He practiced as a barrister from Chambers in London.

After holding various portfolios within the Liberal Democrat party, Simon was elected president of the party in September 1974. He has since worked to ensure a big increase in Liberal Democrat seats at the time of general election.
