The famous 1925 trial of John Scopes in Dayton Tennessee became known as the "Monkey Trial". John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution. This breached the Tennessee anti-evolution law known as the Butler Act. The trial itself received national attention as it was not only one of the first ever court cases which was broadcast live on radio but pitted famous lawyer, Clarence Darrow against past presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan.

  • It all began as a publicity stunt by town businessmen and politicos. Later Scopes would say he never taught that chapter (though it was in the text) and had skipped over it totally. Just a pawn. A $100.00 fine was overturned because the judge had issued the fine, not the jury. They probably would have hung him. (JK) The Butler Act was repealed in 1967 - 42 years after the trial. Some states still have anti-evolution teaching laws ontheir books. They are rarely, if ever, enforced.

  • @KulakxFilms Hmm? Really? My mistake.

  • @KevlarNinja the constitution does not discuss the seperation of church or state.

  • the real movie is such garbage, dont get me wrong, a good drama movie, great acting, but compare to the actual event and its just horrible

  • @Rennimagus I am a jew myself and I am always puzzled when I talk with BA christians!

  • I don't want to offend anyone by saying this, but why did they even BAN evoluation in the first place? I mean, doesnt the american constitution say that the state and the church are two diffrent things? So wondn't that mean that the state of Tenessee comitted treason? Again, don't want to anger anyone here, just unsure about this.

  • Don't underestimate the number of southern troglodyte conservatives on the internet. It's probably not a votebot.

  • I would like to point out the arguement that Lewis Black made- Genesis is found in the Old Testament, which is the book of the Jewish people. Yet Christians will spend hours ranting on their own interpretation of that book, without even stopping to think- Hey, do the Jews still believe this stuff? I have a number of Jewish friends and relatives, and I know not a one who reads Genesis as if it were a fucking college textbook. Look for Lewis Black's thoughts on Creationism on here, it sums it up.
