If you told back in 2010 that I would of spent the whole of 2011 shooting films on a Canon 7D, I would of said you were crazy. I was one of those naysayers who thought they compressed the image too get anything good out of them. Boy was I wrong!
I was asked to shoot a showreel piece at the beginning of the year. I thought it would be worth shooting it on the Canon 7D. I had friends who kept telling me how good it was, so I had to try it out for myself.
I was really impressed. I wasn't shooting under the best of lighting conditions, we were shooting in a gym with available lighting, but I was still able to get a good, well exposed picture. Also the video had a cinematic look, or shallow depth of field, which was very easy to achieve with this camera. If I was shooting on my Sony Z1, I would have to use a lens adaptor or stand very, very far away from the subject to get the same look.
From this one test, I was hooked. I love shooting with this camera and I have go on to shoot the rest of my work with this camera. It has it flaws, like there is an earthquake on screen if you go handheld without a shoulder rig. But for me the postives outway the negatives and I feel it gives power to filmmakers to make good looking films for very little money.
