Yellow Paper Wasp Diary #17 Harvesting Neglected Larvae キアシナガバチ幼虫の採集

This is nest-a of the yellow paper wasp (Polistes rothneyi, family Vespidae), 25 days after the dead queen was found on the nearby cobweb. I decided to get rid of all larvae inside to preserve the nest specimen. Late-July 2008 in Japan.

キアシナガバチ女王がオオヒメグモに殺されてから25日後。給餌を打ち切られた幼虫の飢餓耐性は驚異的です。採集した巣aを記念に保存するには、中の幼虫が腐り始める前に­取り除く必要があります。巣房数35室から幼虫21匹を摘出する作業を3倍速再生でご覧下さい。余力があれば人手で給餌して成虫まで育つか試したかったかも※。あるいは未­経験ですけど、摘出した蜂の子を調理して食べてみるとか。ちょっとそんな気にはなれませんでした。

※飼育経験者によると、キャットフードなども食べてくれるそうです。

当家の2009年のセグロはこんな状況でした。 5/23　長女蛹に 5/24　次女蛹に、母親失踪 5/26　三女蛹に 5/30　猫缶与える 6/15　長女羽化 6/17　次女羽化 6/19　三女羽化 6/27　四女蛹に 7/14　四女羽化 四女は一度猫缶を食べたきり、姉達が世話してくれるまで空腹に耐­え続け、一ヶ月遅れで無事蛹になれたということで、すごい生命力­です。

You could have seen if you could find maybe in injured wasp or a queen still looking for a nest sit. Often both of these (injured and homeless) will readily adopt abandoned nests.

yes, i thought up the same possibility at that time!!

that was why i left the orphaned nests alone for weeks under the eaves.

but no stepmother queens appeared.

i should have looked for candidate queens (2nd-chancer).

after all, i decided to collect the nest specimens before predatory ants or hornets would destroy them.

that was really a dilemma.

next time, i will pursue the adoption on ur advice.

another interesting theme to study.

as u know, wasp larvae/pupae are traditional delicacy in some part of jpn.
