my question is how did the secret service even ok this event? seems to me that he was putting himself in a pretty unsecure environment. was everybody who entered the stadium frisked for weapons?

yes, security was definitely in full force, bomb sniffing dogs and all. the lines to get into the stadium were long as every bag was checked by secret service and everyone had to go through metal detectors.
