  • This is from their recently re- released on CD 'Album of the Year' originally put out on vinyl in the early 1980's if I recall. The best Messengers album ever in my opinion and that's quite a claim to make. The whole damn thing is as good as this and you won't be disappointed I assure you. Fantastic jazz !

  • Art blakey is the youngest out of all of them. He is having too much fun. ;)

  • Haha, the guy at 0:31 is like, "Yes, yes, I get this".

  • I got lucky and found the CD "Album of the Year" at a vinyl/CD shop in St. Louis earlier this year!

  • @erinnanova

Charles Fambrough on bass. Album of the year is for me the best of Art Blakey during the period with Marsalis. Never heard a better sound on a jazz album as on this recording. It was recorded in Paris. Incredible big sound and super music. Everybody at his best. I saw them several times in concert during that period...

  • I wish I could find footage of the other tunes from this performance. I used to have the DVD and I can't find it anymore. If anyone has posted them on here please let me know.

  • amazing piece of jazz music

  • @shanrico Glad you agree. I sense this one slipped under the radar a bit when it came out but of all the great Messengers line-ups over the years, this one with Wynton and Bobby etc., takes some beating doesn't it.

  • @PhilBaird1

Agreed. The entire CD is filled with wonderful compositions and Bobby Watson is on Alto on the CD. I miss Fambrough...

  • great album straight ahead jazz at its best.

  • @erinnanova

    Charles Fambrough
