My friend David's review :- A Crosby-Nash concert in Manchester is always a treat, and last night's concert
at the Bridgewater Hall was no exception. I love S and Y, but there is something special about the CN combination that you don't get with the larger groupings within CSN(&Y). Firstly, there are usually a few more surprises on the setlist: Crosby in particular seems to end up playing largely the same pool of songs with the bigger band line-ups. Last night we got one of the biggest
surprises in forty years, with "Bus Stop", along with welcome outings for "Lee Shore", "Cowboy Movie", "Orleans" and a new song, "Slice of Time". Secondly,
these guys have strong personalities and can be competitive in other contexts, but the unbreakable strength of their friendship and mutual respect is such that
they remain utterly supportive of one another's material as much as their own, to the extent that some of their songs are scarcely imaginable without their dual contributions, e.g. Crosby carrying the core melody on Nash's Wind on the Water, or Nash's ever-astonishing harmony on Crosby's "Guinnevere". Thirdly, you get the best banter in this particular combination. OK, some of it is well-rehearsed and we've heard it before (although it still brings a smile to the face at the tenth time of hearing), but there's always something you can detect as newly ad-libbed. Last night it was the banter about Nash's honorary
degree, conferred earlier in the day by Salford University, e.g. "Now I'm a doctor I can write all your prescriptions for you, Crosby" "Even I know you're not that kind of doctor ... He's a nice guy but he can sometimes be a real
asshole". (OK, maybe you had to be there.) Finally, there's always a bit of extra edge when Nash is back in his home town: the heartfelt dedications to family ("Bus Stop" was a request for sister Elaine) and friends, including
former TOTP photographer, Harry Goodwin, who was sitting not far from us. Last night Nash dedicated "Our House" to an old pal from his first job at the post
office. He'd met him earlier in the day and asked about another former colleague and received the reply "we've been married fifty years this year".
