This isn't just a cartoon....it's an anti-war drama. It has a message to pass to those who will see it. In short, and imo, it's a piece of art. (the OVA cause the remake, has very few things in common with this)

If you ask about Area 88 OVA she is Yamato Airways ' s secretary, very smart and loyal to Ryoko (Shin' s love interest) and his father the President of airline company, hostile to the shadow operations adopted by Kanzaki to take over and later handle management of Yamato Airways.

In the manga she is always troubled because she is not still married in her late 20s (according to Japan perception, a women must be married within 25-26 yo and start having babies, or she is failure)

This was a post Vietnam style movie that had quite a bit more emotion in it than most of the movies produced at that time. Even more than Top Gun.
