Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra. Joe "King" Oliver turned down an invitation to play the Cotton Club demanding more money. The job was passed on to Ellington and the rest is history. Here's a sample of history in the making. Recorded November 21st 1930.

  • Nice record and player. I have to agree with the other comments to, a direct connection will sound so much better. It's easy to do. Thanks for posting this. What brand is the player?

  • Yes, I know a direct connection would have been better but that was not possible at the time. The turntable is a Lenco Model B55, made in Switzerland.

  • Great tune, Dixieland Crackerjacks signature tune.

    A real 78?

  • Absolutely. The genuine 78 pressed nearly 77 years ago.

    Glad you enjoy.

  • Thanks! Proper stuff! Duke's big Jungle vibe, as JCJasion says. Great tune which I'd not heard till 10 minutes ago by Paul Adams, guitarist, he's on youtube. - can't post link!

  • I have so many good 78´s to put up - when I have the spare time I will do it

Good to hear this with REAL sound and not "Muted" Cd sound

  • No one beats The Duke! I'll bet Joe Oliver was kicking himself for a long, long time after turning down the engagement. I just want to tell you: I prefer the "live" recording like you do it, as opposed to a direct connection. I do my vids the same as you; I think it gives a more "being-there" feel to it. Hope you will continue this method

  • Super nice record! No wonder Aunt Tilly shouted!

  • that's a top tune.

  • Nice! I've not heard of that brand, but it looks really neat.

  • Classic Cotton Club "Jungle Music"

I have a mint pressing of this honey.

First heard it on an Ed Beach broadcast on the old WRVR 106.7 FM in 1966

  • Yes, I agree a direct connection would be much better. Check out my videos and you'll see!
