She said

I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away

Check out, 6| Paper Lace - Billy Don't Be A Hero (Christmas TOTP '74) , great live. Paper Lace brought it out in March, 1974 in England planned to release it in the America but Bo Donaldson covered it in June 74 so Paper Lace didn't bother google it
