November 10 - On November 9th, the City of Long Beach celebrated the completion of the 500th home to participate in the water department's Lawn-to-Garden Incentive Program. The program, which began in April 2010, encourages homeowners to replace the lawns from their front yards and parkways with drought tolerant landscaping to help aid the city's water conservation efforts. Qualified participants are provided with a rebate for each square foot of turf removed. "I believe we are just starting to hit our stride with this program," Kevin Wattier, general manager of the Long Beach Water Department, said in a statement.
"At this time, one new landscape is being finished each day and I think it's quite possible that we will see the rate of completion accelerate as more and more residents realize the many benefits that can be achieved by installing these types of yards."
