did nothing bad but just because of his eye...

i am sorry to inform you, but edgar allan poe did not, however, base his short literatures on real life events, but out of his own madness. You were indeed correct that many believed he was sane...but he did not think so, and you can see little hints to know that he was in fact insane. I know i have heard multiple persons say, "How can he be so detailed about a human's own maddness, unless he was crazy?", to honestly be truthful he was crazy, he was a...madman just as he writes in his stories.
