Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(1756-1791)
Piano Quartet in E flat major - K.493

Malcom Bilson, Pianoforte
Elizabeth Wilcock, Violin
Jan Schlapp, Alto
Timothy Mason, Violoncello

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493, was written after Franz Anton Hoffmeister released Mozart from the obligation of writing three piano quartets.

Mozart received a commission for three quartets in 1785 from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister. Hoffmeister thought the G minor Quartet (K. 478) was too difficult and that the public would not buy it, so he released Mozart from the obligation of completing the set. Nine months later, Mozart composed this quartet anyway.

The work is in three movements: * I. Allegro * II. Larghetto * III. Allegretto

  • Who made this delicious cake? I want a piece!

  • Looks very "chocolaty" to me...;-P Seriously, I met some people who claim that "modern" music in 1785 was enjoyable right after being written unlike the music we have nowadays. Here a story for them. Thanks for posting.

  • Actually it was...it was simple tune filled easy predictable music. Of course Mozart doesn't fit into those categories but take a symphony by Wagenseil and you didnt need to hear it even twice to enjoy it because nothing in it is hidden.

  • che meraviglia

  • @elias12186 It's a lie.

  • Is it a filled ashtray atop a daisy-print table cloth?

  • Mozart loved chocolate I've heard. And nuts... hahah

You're simply magic to combine all of this into one post.

    wicked cool

  • You always pick the perfect food to go along with the music!

  • True. There was no such thing as "pop-music" as we have it now. That makes it different. Wagenseil is fine but Emanuel Bach for instance can be very unpredictable although he is, let's say, one category below Mozart. As far as I know in case of this quartett it was more the unusual setup that bothered the publisher.

  • The man was a genius... ugh, I hate him (in a good way). Some people have such great talents, but simply die too young... it sucks.

The food looks just as good as the music! By the way... what's with the food theme? It always gets me hungry and more interested in these culinary delights.
